Part 2: Unveiling Montreal's Charms - Hiking, Festivals, and Culinary Delights

Hiking Mount Royal and Embracing Cultural Festivities

The second morning in Montreal began with a leisurely start after our late-night adventures. Convinced that Luna and I should explore the city's natural beauty, we embarked on a hike up Mount Royal, a serene oasis designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Did you know he also co-designed Central Park in New York City? On this trip alone, this is the third park we have visited that was designed by him. Busy and talented guy!

Culinary Delights and Cultural Surprises

Before our hike, we made a pit stop at a vegan restaurant to buy Luna some spring rolls for the journey. She ended up getting seven spring rolls, and we each got a cookie. Before even getting on the bus, two of them were already in her belly. I love taking buses in new cities since it's a great way to see things you might otherwise miss.

We decided to start our hike at the Peel Street entrance, known for its challenging staircase that leads up to the mountain. The sun was hiding behind some clouds today, making it a warm but manageable hike. Mount Royal is a popular trail, and on a Saturday midday in June, we were not alone. Tourists shared the path with local dog walkers and runners, all exchanging friendly smiles and encouraging words as we made our way up the mountain. The view at the top is definitely worth it, and the park is a lovely addition to this bohemian-loving city, offering a perfect blend of nature and urban charm.

Unexpected Discoveries and Joyful Encounters

Luna wanted to take the bus back down, but it wasn't until the bus passed our stop that I figured out the stop had moved for the summer. My French is basically non-existent, but my Spanish abilities helped me decode the signs. We had our minds set on heading to Jean-Talon Market, North America's largest market, known for its diverse selection of fresh produce, international foods, and vibrant atmosphere.

However, we only made it down the hill and stumbled upon a Hare Krishna festival. This colorful event was a delightful surprise, featuring traditional music, dance, and delicious vegetarian food. The Hare Krishna movement, originating from India, promotes peace, love, and harmony, and their festivals are known for their welcoming and joyful spirit. It was a beautiful way to spend the afternoon, embracing the cultural richness that Montreal has to offer.

Exploring Jean-Talon Market and Beyond

We did end up at Jean-Talon Market, buying fruits, nuts, and snacks for the bus ride back to Toronto the next day. We also found Luna's favorite chocolate sorbet. Apparently, it is really hard to make chocolate sorbet because chocolate has a high fat content, which makes it difficult to achieve the smooth texture of a sorbet without dairy. However, "Havre aux Glaces" at the market makes one of the best vegan ice creams we have tasted. Luna was thrilled with her treat.

Embracing Urban Adventures

After the market, we went back to the festival to attend a yoga class. It ended up being an Ashtanga class - my favourite. The beautiful and inspiring soul who taught the class was Mark Callender. Ashtanga has similarities to martial arts, where rituals, conduct, and a global community among strangers are encouraged. Ashtanga always feels like coming home, no matter where in the world I am. Luna crafted and played for hours while I immersed myself in the class.

Our goal was then to head downtown to get some food and once again tried the bus. We ended up on the same bus line as earlier, only to realize that the reason it wasn't running anymore was because the whole street was turned off for cars. Mount Royal Avenue is transformed into a pedestrian street during the summer, making it a vibrant and bustling area filled with activities, street performers, and local vendors. Luna found Ohana Vegan Sushi restaurant, and it took us about half a second to change plans and stay and eat there instead. What a joyful place and street.

Reflecting on Montreal's Vibrancy

Our journey through Montreal was a tapestry of unexpected delights and cultural richness. From hiking Mount Royal to immersing ourselves in vibrant festivals and savoring culinary adventures, each experience reaffirmed our love for exploration and deepened our appreciation for the city's diverse beauty. I particularly love how the French language adds to the depth of Montreal, highlighting its unique charm and cultural tapestry. It's evident that Montreal's embrace of French contributes to its diversity, openness, and distinctiveness, creating a bohemian atmosphere that resonates throughout the city's streets and neighborhoods.

Tip of the Day:

Embrace differences, explore beyond your comfortable bubble, and experience the world. Learn, reflect, and be part of a more understanding and peaceful tomorrow.
